With the popularity of yesterday's post about the most popular camera phones in Flickr's community, I have decided to look closer at the two most popular manufacturers. According to Flickr Nokia is the most popular camera phone manufacturer followed by Sony Ericsson. So, first lets look at the Nokia data Flickr provides. In the following graph it compares the most popular models among their members.
The most interesting thing you can see is how popular the N series is at Flickr but also how the N73 has recently started gaining ground on the rest of the Nokia phones. One reason this recent surge in popularity in the N73 is that it has a 3.2 mega pixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics versus the N70 has a 2 mega pixel camera. Flickr also released the following chart below with the total number of pictures taken by each model and the average daily users of each camera phone and their popularity ranking.
One thing you will notice right away is that the N73 has far less pictures on Flickr than the N70 does. This can be easily explained since the N73 is a newer model and it has been on the market only a few months versus the N70 which has been nearly a year on the market. One last thing to note is that the average number of users for the N73 is nearly the same as the N70s. This data suggests that as camera phone makers introduce better camera phones users will more likely share them on the internet since these newer models have better image quality than the older models. In another post I will go over what exactly is EXIF. I will also go over what meta data is available for camera phones, which Flickr used to determine these results.
Update:
MyronK who writes the blog Camera2web made a comment and pointed out 2 factors that I didn't know about, here is what he said:
I
would think that Nokia's top position and the rise of the N73 could be
attributed to two things. The first is Nokia (and Sony Ericsson)
dominate the devices supported by Shozu (www.shozu.com),
the great (and free) backgroud upload client and secondly, in April,
Nokia announced that there would be direct Flickr support on the N93,
N73 and N72 (http://press.nokia.com/PR

Goes to show you the value of having your app on the stack!
